Generals stifle Guilford, 66-54, for ninth straight win

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team extended its program-record winning streak to nine games with a 66-54 victory over Guilford on Saturday evening.

The win puts the Generals' overall record at 14-6 and their ODAC record at 11-2, while the Quakers fall to 10-8 overall with the loss and 6-7 in the conference.

Entering the second quarter with a 10-8 lead, the Generals increased their advantage to four on a jumper from sophomore guard Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School). After a 6-3 Guilford run, the Generals struck for seven straight points, and increased their lead to as high as 10 points, before going into halftime with a 27-20 advantage.

The Quakers came within four points early in the third, but a quick 12-4 run for W&L had the Generals ahead by 13 at the 3:01 mark. Guilford's offense began to find its groove, but three's from sophomore guard Erin Addison (Waxhaw, N.C./Weddington), senior forward Molly Mann (Matthews, N.C./Weddington) and sophomore guard Kate Groninger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) kept the Generals ahead by 14 heading into the final frame.

Despite the Quakers outscoring W&L in the fourth, the Generals did not allow Guilford to come closer than nine points over the final 10 minutes of play to secure their ninth consecutive win.

Junior guard Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) led the W&L offense with 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting, to go along with eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) scored nine points and pulled down a game-high 10 boards, while Groninger and Addison both scored eight.

Mann went 2-for-3 from long range in the game and finished with six points and one steal. Senior forward Andy Smithey (Charlotte, N.C./Saint Mary's School) added seven points and tallied five rebounds.

Three Quakers finished the contest in double-figure scoring, led by senior center Julie Carini, who notched 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting overall. Senior forward Miracle Walters and first-year guard Kristen Roberts both scored 10, with Walters adding nine rebounds and four steals.

The Generals shot 43.6 percent (24-55) from the floor and 43.5 percent (10-23) from long range. The 10 made three's for the Generals marks the fifth game of the season with 10 or more triples. W&L limited Guilford to 39.6 percent (19-48) shooting in the game and just 30 percent (3-10) on shots beyond the arc.

For the game, the Generals held advantages in points off turnovers (18-13), second-chance points (11-8) and bench points (25-12), while the Quakers edged W&L in points in the paint (28-24) and fast break points (8-7).

The Generals will return to action on Wednesday when they host Hollins in a 7:00 pm ODAC contest.
