LEXINGTON, Va. – An early run to begin the third quarter pushed the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 69-55 win over Shenandoah on Tuesday evening.
The win marks the Generals' third straight victory, as they improve to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the ODAC, while the Hornets fall to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
With the Generals ahead, 28-27, to begin the third quarter, W&L began the frame on a 15-2 run, fueled by a pair of long range shots from sophomore guard
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro). The Hornets pulled to within eight points with 8:08 remaining in the game, but W&L pulled away for good, outscoring Shenandoah 22-16 from that point on.
The Hornets jumped out to a 12-4 lead through nearly the first five minutes, but a three pointer from sophomore guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) sparked an 11-0 W&L run to end the period, putting the Generals ahead by three. The run stretched to 16-2 overall, capped by another three from Horn with 8:41 left in the second.
Shenandoah then went on a 13-6 run to take a 27-26 lead with 1:16 remaining in the half, before a pair of Horn free throws put the Generals back up by a point heading into halftime.
Horn led the way with 16 points in the game and shot 4-for-6 overall in the game, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Horn added five rebounds and tallied five of her six assists in the second half. Diehl also had a strong game shooting the ball, connecting on 4-of-5 three pointers, as she finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Senior forward
Andy Smithey (Charlotte, N.C./Saint Mary's School) continued her hot play, contributing 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the floor, including 3-for-4 free throws, while adding seven boards, one block and two steals. Junior guard
Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) scored 11 points, secured four boards and finished with two assists, two steals and two blocks.
Shenandoah sophomore forward Ragan Johnson led the Hornets with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, to go along with 11 rebounds and a steal. Senior forward Jordan Sondrol added 12 points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three steals, while sophomore forward Olivia Weinel and sophomore guard Sierra St. Cyr tallied eight points.
For the game, the Generals shot 40 percent (20-50) overall and from long range (8-20), while sinking 21-of-28 free throw attempts, tied for the most makes in a game since February 23 of last season. The 28 attempts marks the most since going to the line 32 times against Shenandoah on January 26 of last season. The Hornets finished the game 24-of-62 (.387) from the field, 2-of-13 (.154) from beyond the arc and 5-of-8 (.625) from the free throw line.
W&L held advantages in the game in points off turnovers (23-8), second-chance points (7-5) and fast break points (10-4), while the Hornets edged the Generals in bench points (16-8) and points in the paint (36-24).
The Generals will return to the court on Saturday when they host Virginia Wesleyan for a 2:00 pm ODAC matchup.
