LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team got out to an early lead and ran away from Virginia Wesleyan in its 91-46 ODAC win on Saturday afternoon.
The Generals earn their fourth straight win and improve to 9-6 overall and 6-2 in the ODAC, while the Marlins drop to 3-11 overall and 2-6 in league play with the loss.
The Marlins made six of their 14 shot attempts in the first quarter, a .429 field goal percentage, but still trailed the Generals, 27-17, through the opening period, as W&L converted on 11-of-25 shots to open the game.
W&L went on to outscore Virginia Wesleyan, 18-7, in the second to take a 45-24 lead into halftime. The Generals continued to pull away in the second half, edging the Marlins, 21-13, in the third, before taking the fourth quarter, 25-9, to yield the final score.
The 91 points scored for W&L marks the most in a game since the Generals defeated Gallaudet, 96-46, on January 5 of last season, while the 45-point win is the highest margin of victory since that day as well.
Junior guard
Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) led all scorers in the game with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting, and she pulled down seven rebounds and tallied one steal and one block. Senior forward
Molly Mann (Matthews, N.C./Weddington) had the hot hand in the game, scoring 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor, including 3-for-3 from long range, in 15 minutes off the bench.
Senior guard
Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) finished with 12 points, moving past Ansley Miller '00 for ninth on the program's all-time scoring list (1,173). Casey also went 1-for-2 on long-range shots to pass Emily Perszyk '18 for second in program history in made three pointers (196). Sophomore guard
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) notched nine points, six rebounds and three assists and sophomore guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) totaled seven points, six rebounds and five assists.
For the Marlins, first-year guard Jessica Jennings led the team with 16 points and added a rebound and an assist, while junior forward Sabrina Jones finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals. Jones also converted on 8-of-12 foul shots.
The Generals shot 40.3 percent from the field on 31-of-77 overall, marking the third consecutive game that the team has shot 40 percent or better. W&L hit on 9-of-22 (.409) three pointers, made 20-of-29 (.690) free throws and pulled down 53 rebounds for their third game of the season with 50 or more, the most such occurrences since the 2015-16 team did it four times.
For the game, the Generals held advantages over the Marlins in points off turnovers (17-9), second-chance points (20-11), bench points (36-8), points in the paint (36-18) and fast break points (20-2).
The Generals will return to the court on Wednesday when they travel to Lynchburg for a 5:00 pm ODAC contest.
