Late run fuels Generals to 66-62 win at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – A late fourth-quarter run propelled the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 66-62 ODAC win over Guilford on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Generals improve to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the ODAC, while the Quakers slip to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The win for the Generals marks the first win over the Quakers in Greensboro since February 11, 2011.
 
With the game tied, 51-51, at the start of the fourth, scoring slowed in the period, as Guilford held a slight 58-57 edge with 2:56 remaining in the game. But the Generals then went on a 9-1 run to claim a seven-point lead with 11 seconds to go and secure the win.
 
Both sides were about even through the opening nine minutes of the contest, with the Quakers holding a slight 14-12 lead. The Generals then scored the final five points of the opening frame and added a three-pointer to open the second for an overall 8-0 run to take a 20-14 lead at the 9:32 mark. Guilford then stopped the run and fought back to take a 31-30 lead into halftime.
 
After both teams exchanged 10 points each to open the third quarter, the Generals scored seven straight points to take a 48-42 lead with 3:56 left in the frame. But the Quakers closed the period with a 9-3 run to tie the contest heading into the fourth.
 
Senior forward Andy Smithey (Charlotte, N.C./Saint Mary's School) led the way in the game for the Blue and White with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists. She shot 6-of-8 from the field and connected on all six of her foul shots as well. Senior guard Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) contributed 16 points, three rebounds and three assists. Casey also made 4-of-8 shots from long range, giving her 194 in her career, which puts her one behind Emily Perszyk '18 for the second-most in program history.
 
Sophomore guard Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) added 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal for the Generals.
 
Guilford senior center Julie Carini scored 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and also pulled down eight rebounds. First-year guard Kristen Roberts added 14 points and three boards off the bench, while senior forward Miracle Walters scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds.
 
The Generals shot 45.3 percent (24-53) overall in the game, connected on 9-of-26 (.346) three-point shots, and made all of their free throws (nine attempts) for the first time since going 6-for-6 as a team against Bridgewater on February 9, 2016. The nine made free throws on nine attempts also marks the most makes without a miss in a single game in program history.
 
For the game, the Quakers held advantages over the Generals in points off turnovers (10-6), second-chance points (8-6), bench points (19-10) and points in the paint (34-26), while W&L outscored Guilford on fast breaks, 10-6.
 
The Generals will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Shenandoah at 7:00 pm in a rematch of the 2019 ODAC championship game.
