Generals Make 14 Three's in 81-65 Win at Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team shot a season-high 48.3 percent (14-of-29) from beyond the arc in an 81-65 victory at Randolph on Wednesday at the RAD Center.

The Generals (11-4, 3-3 ODAC) jumped out to a 33-16 lead with 6:52 left in the opening half, but the WildCats (6-10, 2-5 ODAC) closed the period with a 20-10 spurt to cut the margin to 38-29 at the break.

The WildCats continued to work down the lead in the second and trimmed it to 55-51 with 11:59 left in the game, but then sophomore guard Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) drove in for a layup while being fouled to push the advantage to 57-51.

Lamendola missed the free throw, but junior forward Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) secured the rebound and was fouled on his put-back attempt. He converted both at the line to stretch the lead to 59-51 at the 11:44 mark. After a missed three-pointer by Randolph, Lamendola was sent back to the line. He made the first, but missed the second.

Junior forward William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) grabbed the rebound and found senior guard Kevin Dennin (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) in front of his own bench for a long triple to extend the Blue and White's lead to 63-51 with 11:18 remaining in the contest. Dennin's triple capped an 8-0 run for W&L in just 42 seconds. The Generals' lead did not drop below nine points the rest of the way, as the team cruised to the 16-point victory.

Mitchell tied his career-high with 21 points on 9-of-12 from the field. He also had eight rebounds and four assists. Lamendola tied a career-high with 19 points on 6-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-6 from long range. He also notched five rebounds.

Dennin totaled 14 points on 4-of-7 from distance, while tallying five rebounds. Brueggeman had 11 points and six boards. The Generals controlled the glass, holding a 40-28 advantage and a 21-6 margin in second-chance points.

While W&L was making half its shots from beyond the arc, Randolph shot just 6-of-20 (30.0 percent) from three-point distance. The WildCats also shot just 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the field, while the Blue and White made 52.6 percent (30-of-57) from the floor.

Junior wing CJ Loving led Randolph with 14 points, while senior guard Brian Smith and sophomore guard Jerry Goodman each had 13 points.

The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host Shenandoah at 2:00 pm.
