LEXINGTON, Va. — First-year guard
Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) tied a career-best with 22 points to lead the Washington and Lee men's basketball team to an 87-77 victory against Shenandoah on Saturday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
The Generals (12-4, 4-3 ODAC) quickly assumed a 13-point lead (18-5) in the game's first eight minutes. The Hornets (5-11, 2-5 ODAC) trimmed the deficit to 21-12 at the 8:55 mark, but over the next four and a half minutes, the Blue and White tallied 14 of the next 17 points to take a 35-15 advantage with 4:20 left in the half.
W&L stretched the margin to 24 (43-19) on a triple by junior forward
William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) with 2:17 to go in the half, but Shenandoah closed the period on an 8-0 spurt to cut the lead to 43-27 at the break.
The Hornets didn't go away in the second and had the advantage down to 10, 70-60, with 5:16 left in the game. Brueggeman then split a pair of free throws and sophomore guard
Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) converted two at the line to bring the margin back to 73-60 at the 3:29 mark.
Senior forward Alan Dabney made a couple of free throws for Shenandoah on the next trip down, but Manigault answered with his sixth triple of the game to put the Generals in front, 76-62, with 2:52 remaining in the contest. The Hornets played the foul game down the stretch, but W&L made 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute to hold on for the win.
Manigault shot 7-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-11 from three-point range to total his 22 points. He also had three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Bruggeman contributed 20 points and seven rebounds.
Junior forward
Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) registered a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. He also had five blocks and two steals. He now has 39 blocks this season, which is 10th-most in a single-season in W&L history.
The Generals finished the game 13-of-44 (29.5 percent) from beyond the arc, breaking the school record for attempts. The previous mark was 40, which was done twice previously. Most recently, W&L took 40 triples at Drew on November 17, 2018.
Shenandoah made just 5-of-19 (26.3 percent) from long range. The Blue and White dominated the glass, grabbing 51 rebounds compared to just 34 for the Hornets.
Sophomore guard Zach Garrett led Shenandoah with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Dabney contributed 14 points and five boards.
The Generals return to the court on Wednesday, when they host Roanoke at 7:00 pm.
