Generals outpaced by Hollins, 82-68

ROANOKE, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team suffered an 82-68 loss at Hollins on Wednesday night in ODAC play.
 
The loss drops the Generals to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the ODAC, while Hollins improves to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in conference.
 
Trailing, 7-3, through the first three minutes of the game, the Generals leaped out to a 17-11 lead with under a minute to play, thanks to a 14-4 run. The Generals closed the opening frame ahead, 20-13, before Hollins cut into its deficit by three points before the half.
 
Hollins' offense exploded in the third quarter, outscoring W&L, 28-14, to take a 59-49 lead into the fourth. Hollins went on to take the fourth quarter margin as well, 23-19, to yield the final score.
 
Senior forward Molly Mann (Matthews, N.C./Weddington) led the W&L offense with a career-high 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor. Mann also tallied six rebounds and an assist. Junior guard Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) scored 10 points, pulled down four rebounds and notched three steals and sophomore guard Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) collected 10 boards, her third game of the season with at least 10, to go along with seven points and five assists.
 
Hollins saw five players reach double-digit scoring in the contest, led by sophomore guard Kayla Surles, who recorded 17 points and nine assists. Junior forward Yasmine Tyler scored 16 points on 6-of-8 from the field and junior forward Keyazia Taylor tallied 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting overall.
 
For the game, Hollins connected on 31-of-55 shot attempts (.564) and made 16-of-22 (.727) foul shots, while the Generals were held to 22-of-67 shooting (.328) from the floor. Hollins held advantages for the game in points off turnovers (16-7), points in the paint (42-22) and fast break points (18-6), while W&L outpaced Hollins in second-chance points (11-6) and bench points (33-11).
 
The Generals will return to the hardwood on Saturday, December 14, when they step out of conference play for a 1:00 pm road game at Mary Washington.
