FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Clutch shots at the end of regulation and overtime were the difference for the Washington and Lee women's basketball team, as it earned a hard-fought 65-59 victory at Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing by three with a minute to play in the fourth, senior guard
Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) hit a deep three pointer to tie the game. After a Mary Washington bucket on the other end, Casey connected on a floater in the paint to re-tie the game with 38 seconds left and send it to overtime.
In the extra frame, the Generals opened with a four-point lead before the Eagles fought back to lead, 56-55, with 1:46 to play. Then, with 36 seconds left, sophomore guard
Erin Addison (Waxhaw, N.C./Weddington) connected on a triple from the corner and was fouled. She went on to make her two free throws to ice the game away.
The Generals bounced back after a slow start in the first quarter, ending the opening frame by scoring seven straight points to claim an 11-8 lead entering the second. The Eagles went on to outscore the Generals in the second, but W&L closed the quarter by scoring the final five points to take a 23-21 lead into halftime.
After W&L built up a seven-point lead in the third, the Eagles countered with an 11-1 run spanning into the fourth quarter to regain a two-point advantage.
Casey led the way with 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the field, including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, and added three rebounds. Senior forward
Andy Smithey (Charlotte, N.C./Saint Mary's School) logged an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double, her second of the season, while sophomore guard
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) contributed nine points and nine rebounds.
For the Eagles, junior guard Maddie Shifflett scored 21 points to lead the offense, and also pulled down eight boards. First-year guard Molly Sharman scored 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting and added four rebounds, two assists and four steals, while junior forward Tory Martin added nine points.
The Generals held the Eagles to 36.5 percent shooting (23-63) and shot 41.2 percent (21-51) themselves. The Eagles made just one three pointer and the Generals were 7-of-19 (.368) from long range. Mary Washington edged W&L in points off turnovers (20-19), while the Generals' bench outscored the Eagles' bench, 15-12.
W&L will return to action on Monday when they make the short trip to Southern Virginia for a 5:00 pm tip-off against the Knights.
