LEXINGTON, Va. — Randolph shot 15-of-22 (68.2 percent) from three-point range to defeat the Washington and Lee men's basketball team, 89-68, on Wednesday at the Duchossois Tennis Center. Conversely, the Generals (5-3, 1-2 ODAC) made just 5-of-30 (16.7 percent) from beyond the arc.
The WildCats (3-4, 1-1 ODAC) made their first six triples of the game, while W&L missed its first eight, as Randolph built a 20-point (36-16) lead by the 5:59 mark of the opening half. The Blue and White took five points off the margin by intermission with the WildCats leading 43-28 at the break.
Randolph led 47-30 with 18:11 on the clock in the second, but junior forward
Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) slammed home a dunk and followed with a layup to cut the deficit to 13 (47-34) with 17:13 remaining in the contest. First-year guard
Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) then drained a three-pointer to bring the Generals to within 10, 47-37.
After a jumper by senior guard Zach Hinton, Mitchell converted another dunk and Manigault sunk his second three of the contest. Junior forward Justin Dula made a layup on the other end, but Manigault answered with another three to pull W&L to within six (51-45) with 14:54 left in the contest.
Randolph responded with six straight points over the next minute and a half of action to extend the lead back to 12, 57-45. The margin was 10 (59-49) with 12:09 on the clock, but a jumper by first-year wing Justin Lowe and a step-back three-pointer by sophomore guard Evan Makle at the 11:08 mark pushed the lead to 15 (64-49).
The WildCats' advantage did not drop below double-digits the rest of the way, as W&L lost its second league game of the year.
Mitchell led the Generals with a career-high 21 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Manigault added 11 points and two steals. First-year guard
Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) totaled eight points, five rebounds and five assists.
