SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team shot 51.4 percent from the field in the opening half and held on for an 83-78 victory over Schreiner on Monday at the Leslie Robinson Tournament hosted by Trinity (Texas).
The Generals (6-3) led. 61-40, with 15:08 remaining in the second half, but the Mountaineers (1-5) rallied over the next 13 minutes to trim the deficit to two (77-75) with 2:46 left on the clock.
On W&L's next possession, junior forward
William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) drained a jumper in the paint to push the Blue and White's advantage to 79-75 at the 2:21 mark. Junior forward Matthew Rindahl missed a layup on the other end, and then first-year guard
Jack Lewis (Rockville, Md./Sidwell Friends) buried a jumper from the left side to give the Generals a six-point edge (81-75) with 1:50 to go in the contest.
Rindahl answered with an old-fashioned three-point play, drawing the fifth foul on Bruegguman, to pull Schreiner to within three, 81-78, with just 54 seconds left in the game. On the Blue and White's offensive possession, junior forward
Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) missed a triple from the left corner at the 32-second mark. Senior forward
Mark Croughan (Rye, N.Y./Rye) grabbed the offensive rebound, but first-year guard
Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) came up empty on a three-pointer from the right wing with 24 ticks on the clock.
The Mountaineers secured the board, and then junior guard Chase Pinter missed the potential game-tying triple from the right wing with nine seconds left. The ball went out of bounds to give W&L possession, and senior guard
Kevin Dennin (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) was immediately fouled on the ensuing in-bounds pass and drilled both free throws to give W&L the five-point victory.
The Generals made 19-of-37 (51.5 percent) of its shots from the floor in the first half, but just 12-of-29 (41.4 percent) in the second to finish the game at 47.0 percent (31-of-66). W&L netted just 1-of-13 three-pointers in the second to end the contest at 25.0 percent (8-of-32).
Schreiner shot 38.6 percent (27-of-70) from the field and 28.6 percent (8-of-28) from long range on the night.
Brueggeman totaled 18 points on 6-of-12 from the field before fouling out. Mitchell had his second double-double of the year with 12 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. Dennin, in his first start this season, totaled 13 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore guard Alex Dehoyos notched a game-high 21 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists for the Mountaineers. Rindahl added 18 points and six rebounds, while junior guard Andrew Sparks had 17 points and four boards.
The Generals finish competition at the Leslie Robinson Tournament, when they take on host Trinity at 1:00 pm Central Standard Time on Tuesday.
