SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Senior guard
Kevin Dennin (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) and junior forward
William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) combined for 50 points, and Dennin tied the program's single-game three-pointers made record to lead the Washington and Lee men's basketball team to an 88-71 victory at Trinity (Texas) on Tuesday on the final day of the Leslie Robinson Tournament.
The Generals (7-3) held a two-point advantage (20-18) with 11:42 left in first and finished the half on a 27-14 burst to effectively put the game away a take a 47-32 lead into the break. Brueggeman started the run with five straight points, and first-year guard
Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) followed with a layup off an assist from first-year guard
Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley).
A pair of free throws by first-year guard Jalen White momentarily stalled the Blue and White's spurt, but then a triple by Dennin and a layup by Wise put W&L in front, 32-20, at the 7:03 mark.
Two more free throws by sophomore forward Jack Williams pulled the Tigers (2-5) back to within 10, but over the next two and half minutes, the Generals scored 10 straight points to assume a 42-22 advantage with 4:40 on the clock.
Trinity outscored W&L, 10-5, during the final five minutes of the period, but the damage was already done, as the Blue and White held a 15-point margin to start the second half. In the final frame, the Generals built its lead to as large as 25 points on their way to the 17-point win.
Dennin shot 10-of-16 from the field and drained seven triples (7-of-13) to notch a career-high 27 points, while also adding a career-best four steals. He is the seventh player (8 times total) in W&L history to make seven three-pointers in a game and the first since Javon McDonald '15 accomplished the feat in 2013.
Brueggeman had his first double-double of the season with 23 points, 11 rebounds and two steals. Junior forward
Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) registered a team-best 14 rebounds and over his last five games has grabbed 59 boards (11.8 rpg).
W&L tallied a season-high 24 assists and outrebounded Trinity, 51-40. The Blue and White shot 44.2 percent (34-of-77) from the field and 33.3 percent (12-of-36) from downtown.
Sophomore guard Ben Hanley led the Tigers with 21 points, and sophomore guard Jordan Lippman had 15 points, 12 rebounds and three steals.
The Generals break for the holidays and return to action when they host St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday, December 28, at 2:00 pm.
