Manigault Propels Generals to 81-60 Victory over Tigers

LEXINGTON, Va. — First-year guard Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) tied a season-high with 22 points on 8-of-12 from the field to lead the Washington and Lee men's basketball team past Hampden-Sydney, 81-60, on Sunday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.

The Generals (5-2, 1-1 ODAC) held a two-point advantage, 40-38, with 16:19 left in the second, but then the team went on a 9-0 run to break the game open. Manigault started the burst with a pair of free throws, and then a triple by senior guard Kevin Dennin (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) at the 15:27 mark stretched the lead to 45-38.

Senior forward Mark Croughan (Rye, N.Y./Rye) followed with a layup, and then two free throws by junior forward Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) extended the margin to 49-38 with 14:09 left in the contest. First-year guard Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) assisted on all three buckets during the run on his way to seven for the contest.

The Tigers (1-5, 0-1 ODAC) trimmed the lead to 55-48 on a jumper by sophomore forward Wyatt with 10:06 remaining in the game, but back-to-back three-pointers by Manigault and two free throws by first-year guard Cheick Toure (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends School) propelled the Blue and White to a 63-48 lead at the 8:46 mark. The margin did not drop under double-digits the rest of the way, as W&L coasted to the 21-point win.

Manigault added three rebounds to his 22 points, while making 4-of-7 from long range in just 20 minutes. Mitchell notched his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go with four blocks. Wise had just four points, but added the seven assists, nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

W&L dominated the glass, 56-38, which led to a 16-7 advantage in second-chance points. The Generals made 20-of-22 (90.9 percent) of their shots from the foul line compared to 10-of-16 (62.5 percent) for H-SC.

Wyatt led the Tigers with 16 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Kevin Quinn came off the bench to add 15 points and five rebounds. First-year guard Chase Turner did a little bit of everything with three points, seven rebounds and five steals.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they host Randolph at 7:00 pm.
