No. 22 Generals cruise into ODAC semifinals with 4-0 win over Ferrum

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 22nd-ranked and second-seeded Washington and Lee women's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 victory over Ferrum in the ODAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.

The win propels the Generals to 16-1-2 overall and into the ODAC semifinals for the first time since 2016. The Panthers end their season at 9-8-2 overall with the loss.

Sophomore forward Emily Leding (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) put the Generals out in front, 1-0, in the 19th minute with her fourth score of the season, after making a move around a Ferrum defender and finishing with her left foot. In the 38th minute, junior forward Sydney von Rosenberg (Boerne, Texas/Boerne-Samuel V. Champion) added her fourth goal of the season following a long pass played ahead by first-year midfielder Caitlin Barnes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day).

The Generals extended their lead to 3-0 in the 42nd minute when senior defender Laney Smith (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook) headed in a corner cross taken by senior defender Emily Roche' (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run). In the 72nd minute, Roche' repeated her efforts when she crossed in another corner kick that was headed into the back of the net by first-year midfielder Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic).

Leding's, von Rosenberg's and Smith's goals went down as the group's fourth scores of the year, as the trio combined for 12 shots and eight attempts on goal. Wielechowski's goal was her fifth of the year, giving her the third most goals on the team this season. Roche' earned two assists, while Barnes logged her first career assist just one game after scoring her first career goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jasmine Furin (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School) (3-0) earned the win in net for the Generals, playing all 90 minutes. She was not required to make a save, as the W&L defense did not allow a single shot attempt. Ferrum senior keeper Taylor Dodson (7-7-2) took the loss, but made 13 saves in 90 minutes of action.

For the game, the Generals held a 35-0 shot advantage, with 22 of attempts in the second half. The Generals also earned 15 corner kicks in the game, while allowing none.
