LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore forward
Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) tallied two goals to lead the third-seeded Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over sixth-seeded Bridgewater in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Tuesday at the W&L Turf Field.
Weise tallied the Generals' (10-7) first and third goals of the contest. She gave W&L a 1-0 advantage in the seventh minute of the opening period. Weise took the ball away from a defender in the offensive zone, and then dribbled into the circle on the right side.
As Weise approached the cage, she fired the ball toward the goal. An Eagles' (5-14) defender momentarily blocked the ball with her stick, but the momentum of the strike pushed the ball past the line to give W&L a 1-0 advantage with 8:26 left in the first period.
The Blue and White extended the lead to 2-0 just 1:40 into the second quarter. First-year forward
Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) possessed the ball on the right side of the circle, dribbling toward the goal. She fired a similar shot to Weise's, and this time the ball ricocheted off the goalie and into the cage to extend the Generals' lead to 2-0.
W&L took the first 13 shots of the contest until Bridgewater cut the deficit to 2-1 with nine minutes left in the half. The Eagles sent a cross from the left side of the circle to the right post, and junior forward Courtney Cooke quickly redirected the ball toward an open goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) dove to stop the shot, but it trickled past her, and senior midfielder Elise Lloyd cleaned up the loose ball, sweeping it into the goal.
The score remained 2-1 until there was 12:08 remaining in the fourth period. On a counter attacker, senior forward
Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) dribbled the ball down the left side into the circle. She fired a shot at the goal, but senior goalkeeper Ali Bishop made a diving save. The ball popped out to the center of the circle, and Weise was right there to strike the rebound into the cage to push the game to its final score of 3-1.
With the two tallies, Weise now has seven goals on the season. The Generals finished the game with a 31-6 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in penalty corners.
Amil played the full 60 minutes, making one save. Senior goalkeeper Emily Witzke started for the Eagles and stopped four shots in 30 minutes. Bishop played the final two quarters, making eight saves.
The Generals take on second-seeded Shenandoah on Friday at 7:00 pm in the tournament semifinals hosted by Lynchburg.
