LYNCHBURG, Va. — Senior midfielder Taylor Hayes tallied two goals to lead second-seeded Shenandoah to a 2-1 victory over the third-seeded Washington and Lee field hockey team on Friday in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament at Shellenberger Field at the University of Lynchburg.
The Hornets scored the first goal of the game just 4:33 into the opening period. Off a penalty corner, the ball was inserted to the right side. Sophomore midfielder Kelsey Jones dribbled to the center of the circle and then slipped the ball out to the left side. Hayes took one touch and slammed the ball into the cage for a 1-0 SU advantage.
The score remained 1-0 through the remainder of the first half, and then Shenandoah had a chance to add to its lead in the third period, when the team was awarded a penalty stroke just 1:04 into the quarter. Hayes took the stroke for the Hornets, but sophomore goalkeeper
Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) stopped the shot.
In the fourth, the Hornets extended the lead to 2-0 again off a penalty corner. The ball was sent to Jones at the top of the circle. She passed the ball back to the left and Hayes took a quick swing, firing the ball into the back of the cage for her second tally.
The Generals (10-8) trimmed the deficit to 2-1 with 3:50 remaining in the fourth quarter. Junior midfielder
Kelly Fennessy (Bel Air, Md./Roland Park Country School) dribbled the ball into the top of the circle, sending a pass ahead to first-year forward
Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School).
Tobeason struck the ball toward the goal, but junior goalkeeper Isabella Morande stopped the shot. The rebound fell to the stick of first-year forward
Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) on the right side, and she struck the ball inside the right post to close the gap to 2-1. It marked the fifth goal of the season for Muneses.
Shenandoah controlled the ball for the final four minutes of the game, as the Blue and White did not possess the ball inside the offensive circle the rest of the way. W&L held a slight edge, 11-10, in shots in the contest, but the Hornets had a commanding, 12-4, advantage in penalty corners.
Amil registered five saves over the course of the game, while Morande made seven. Muneses and senior forward
Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) each took four shots to lead W&L.
This concludes the 2019 season for the Generals.
