Paolano Lifts Generals to 3-1 Victory over Bridgewater

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) tallied two goals to send the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Bridgewater in the final game of the regular season.

Both of Paolano's goals came in the first 28 minutes of the game. She tallied the first off a rebound in the first 40 seconds of the second quarter. Sophomore forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) shot from the right side, but it was saved. The ball bounced to Paolano in the center of the circle and she fired it into the top right corner of the cage to give the Generals (9-7, 6-2 ODAC) a 1-0 lead with 14:22 left in the period.

With the goal, Paolano moved into sole possession of second on the W&L career goals list with 51. She added the 52nd of her career with 2:23 left in the half. First-year forward Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) dribbled the ball down the left side and sent a pass to Paolano in the circle. Paolano then quickly struck the ball through senior goalkeeper Ali Bishop's legs for the goal.

The Generals extended the lead to 3-0 with 4:22 left in the contest. First-year Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) controlled the ball on the right side and shot toward the goal. The ball deflected off of senior goalkeeper Emily Witzke and popped to the left side of the cage.

Junior forward Caroline Grace (Warwick, R.I./Phillips Exeter Academy) and a defender both made contact with the ball at the same time, causing it to hop back in front of the goal, where Tobeason tapped it into the left corner of the cage. Junior defender Kelsey Hicks scored with 1:58 on the clock for the Eagles' (5-13, 3-5 ODAC) lone tally to reach the final margin, 3-1.

W&L controlled possession throughout the contest, taking 23 shots compared to five for Bridgewater. The Blue and White also led in penalty corners, 6-1.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) played the entire contest, making one save. Bishop and Witzke each played one half, with Bishop getting the start. Bishop allowed two goals with seven saves, while Witzke totaled four saves with one goal allowed.

The Blue and White honored its four seniors before the contest. W&L recognized Paolano, forward Mira Bharatiya (Trenton, N.J./Robbinsville) and defenders Olivia Hewitt (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) and Lexi Prochniak (Oreland, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) for their contributions to the program.

The two teams will match up again on Tuesday in the ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Generals will host the contest at the W&L Turf Field as the three seed in the tournament, while the Eagles will come in as the six seed. The time of the game is still to be determined.
