LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 17 Washington and Lee women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 17 games with a 2-1 victory over Shenandoah on Wednesday afternoon in ODAC play.
The win propels the Generals to 15-0-2 overall and 8-0-1 in the ODAC, while the Hornets fall to 11-7 overall and 6-4 in the conference. With the win, W&L has clinched a top-two seed for the upcoming ODAC Championship Tournament and is now just one game away from tying the 2006 team for the longest unbeaten start to a season in program history.
First-year forward
Lindsay White (Greenville, S.C./JL Mann) put the Generals out in front, 1-0, in the 25th minute when she fired a shot from just outside of the 18-yard box, aiming her attempts to the far post. The goal marked her team-leading ninth score of the season.
In the 39th minute, the Generals were on another attacking chance when a cross into the box was booted out by a Shenandoah defender. First-year defender
Brenna Wehner (Crosswicks, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) gathered the ball about 35 yards out and unleashed a shot that finished in the top left corner of the frame, putting W&L ahead, 2-0, before halftime.
The Hornets cut the Generals' lead in half in the 61st minute when junior midfielder Abby Alexa found room inside the 18 for a shot from across the goal that bent inwards and just inside the right post. However, W&L's strong defensive unit allowed just two more shots over the final 29 minutes to keep the Hornets off the board and preserve the win.
White's goal came on one of her four shots on frame, as the first-year forward finished the contest with five total shots. Wehner's goal in the 39th minute marked the first of her collegiate career, while first-year midfielder
Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) tallied a game-high seven shots.
Shenandoah was led on offense by Alexa, who took four of the Hornets' eight shots in the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (13-0-2) earned the win in goal for the Blue and White after making two saves in 90 minutes of action. Sophomore Emilie Smith (4-4) played all game in net for the Hornets and made eight saves, in addition to her defense coming through with a save as well.
For the game, the Generals outshot the Hornets, 25-8, including a 17-5 margin in the first half. W&L also earned 12 corner kicks on the day and surrendered just one.
The Generals will close out the 2019 regular season on Saturday when they travel to Bridgewater for a 1:00 pm ODAC contest.
