W&L Volleyball Upended by CNU, 3-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team saw its nine-match winning streak come to an end in a 3-1 loss at Christopher Newport on Saturday.

The Generals (22-6) won the first set, 25-22, but the Captains (22-7) answered by winning the second, 22-15, and the third, 25-14. In the fourth, the Blue and White jumped out to a 7-3 lead, but CNU responded with 6-2 run to even the set, 9-9.

W&L held a 17-16 advantage later in the set, but four straight points by the Captains pushed CNU in front, 20-17. Down, 23-19, a few points later, the Generals had a kill by junior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) sandwiched between a couple of errors by Christopher Newport to pull to within one (23-22). A kill by sophomore middle blocker Mackenzie Wright gave CNU two shots at match point, and it converted the second on a kill by senior middle blocker Riley Garrison to take the set, 25-23, and that match, 3-1.

Junior outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) led W&L with 10 kills on a .364 hitting percentage. She also had 13 digs. First-year defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) registered 17 digs and pushed her season total to 460, which is the eighth-best single-season total in program history. Emily Wolfing '05 holds the seventh-best mark with 485 in 2003.

Junior middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville,/Va. Western Albemarle) had nine kills on a .400 hitting percentage, and first-year setter Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) totaled 25 assists and five digs. Gould finished with 11 digs and eight kills.

Senior outside hitter Katie Piper led the Captains with 18 kills and 17 digs. First-year setter Sammy Carroll contributed 39 assists, four kills and three digs.

The Generals return to action on Tuesday, when they host Roanoke at 6:30 pm for Senior Night.
