LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 18 Washington and Lee women's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to upend Randolph, 2-0, in ODAC play on Saturday afternoon.
The win extends the Generals' unbeaten streak to 16 games to start the season, as their overall record now stands at 14-0-2, with a mark of 7-0-1 in the ODAC. The loss drops the WildCats to 5-8-2 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
With the game still scoreless through 65 minutes of play, the Generals restarted the ball after a stoppage in play. Sophomore forward
Emily Leding (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) brought the ball up and found junior midfielder
Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) on the left side. Hoeh took the ball into the box and beat the Randolph keeper to her left for the game's first score.
In the 81st minute, Leding found room inside the goal box to get her own shot off. An off-balanced attempt, Leding was able to put enough behind her attempt to get the ball inside the left post to double the Generals' lead and secure the win.
Hoeh ended the game with a game-high eight shots, while her goal in the 65th minute was her third of the season. Leding's three points led the W&L offense, as the sophomore concluded with five shots and three on goal. Senior forward
Kelsey Anderson (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) and first-year forward
Lindsay White (Greenville, S.C./JL Mann) also had strong performances, with five shots each.
For the WildCats, junior forward Sara Bane led the team with three shots in the contest as the team finished with four shots in the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jasmine Furin (Charlottesville, Va./St Anne's-Belfield School) started for the Generals and made one save in the first half. Sophomore
Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (12-0-2) relieved Furin at halftime and made one save in the second half to earn the win.
Randolph sophomore keeper Deaven Milam (0-1) took the loss for the WildCats after making seven saves across the full 90 minutes.
For the game, W&L outshot the WildCats, 43-4, including 25-2 in the second half, and took 13 corner kicks without allowing Randolph one corner.
The Generals close out their 2019 regular season home slate on Wednesday when Shenandoah visits for a 3:30 pm ODAC showdown.
