Strong first half sends No. 12 Generals to 5-1 win over Guilford

LEXINGTON, Va. – A five-goal outburst in a 17-minute span in the first half powered the No. 12 Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 5-1 win over Guilford on Saturday afternoon.
 
The win pushes the Generals to 11-2-3 overall and 5-1-1 in the ODAC, while the loss drops the Quakers to 7-7-1 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
 
After 24 minutes of scoreless play, the Generals broke through on the scoreboard when first-year midfielder Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season. Just under three minutes later, first-year forward Victor Ndhlovu (Solwezi, Zambia/Trident College) headed in his first career goal after a long cross into the box from first-year midfielder John Peterson (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield).
 
In the 39th minute, senior defender Griffin Scott (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Jesuit) scored his first goal of the season off a feed from junior forward Harry Pinkerton (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett), followed by Pinkerton's fourth score of the season in the 42nd minute. Peterson capped the W&L scoring just 67 seconds later when he finished from close range after receiving a pass from Pinkerton.
 
Guilford closed the scoring for the game in the 84th minute when first-year forward Kenny Nzekwe found the back of the net.
 
Pinkerton's four points on offense paced the Generals for the game, while Peterson came in closely behind with three points on a goal and an assist. Junior forward Harris Salom (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) tallied a game-high four shots, while first-year defender Jack Rawlins (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary) assisted on Pinkerton's goal.
 
Nzekwe was the only Quaker to finish with multiple shots in the game, and put one of his two attempts on goal.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) (11-2-3) earned the win in net for the Generals, playing 78:27. First-years Rye McMillen (Fairfax, Va./The Heights School) and Garrett Erickson (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Ramstein (Germany)) combined to play the final 11:33 in net for W&L.
 
Guilford sophomore keeper Fisher Athey (1-3-1) took the loss after making 12 saves in 90 minutes of action.
 
For the game, the Generals led in shots by a 32-6 margin, including a 17-3 edge in the second half. They also outpaced Guilford in corner kicks, 7-4.
 
The Generals will close out their 2019 regular season slate on Wednesday when they travel to Eastern Mennonite for a 7:00 pm kick-off.
