HARRISONBURG, Va. – With his ninth shutout of the season, sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) set a new program single-season shutouts record to lead the No. 13 Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 5-0 win over Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday night to close out the 2019 regular season.
With the win, the Generals close the 2019 regular season with a 12-2-3 overall record and a mark of 6-1-1 in the ODAC to secure the No. 2 seed for the upcoming ODAC Championship Tournament. The loss drops the Royals to 5-14 overall and 0-8 in conference.
Nyc (12-2-3) made three saves in 90 minutes of action to earn his ninth clean sheet of the season. In addition, nine shutouts this year gives him 17 in his career, already tied for the second most in school history with Albert Civitarese '15 and Ted Sheedy '08.

Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) put the Generals ahead just 54 seconds into the game, before first-year midfielder
Victor Ndhlovu (Solwezi, Zambia/Trident College) added his second goal of the season in the 39th minute, as W&L took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The score remained 2-0 in favor of the Generals until the 75th minute when first-year defender
Tyler Smith (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes School) scored for the first time in his career off an assist from Bass. Junior forward
Harry Pinkerton (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett) tallied a goal in the 80th minute, before first-year midfielder
John Peterson (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) capped the scoring in the 85th minute.
Bass led the way for the Generals' offense with one goal and a pair of assists, in addition to taking eight shots in the game. Peterson and Pinkerton both finished with a goal and an assist each and combined for five shots in the contest and four on goal. Junior midfielders
Harris Salom (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) and
Jack Parham (Littleton, Colo./Colorado Academy) also had one assist each.
For the Royals, senior midfielder Caleb Oakes got three shots off in the game to pace the offense. Junior forward Leiyan Kariuki tallied two shots for EMU. First-year goalkeeper Micah Buckwalter (0-1) and sophomore keeper Ahmed Zaatar split time in net for the Royals, with Buckwalter making seven saves in the first half, before Zaatar stopped eight shots in the second half.
For the game, the Generals outshot the Royals, 40-6, and 20-3 in shots on goal. W&L took 22 of its 40 shots in the second half and earned 10 corner kicks in the game, while allowing three.
The Generals will host seventh-seeded Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday in the ODAC Quarterfinals, with the time of the game to be determined.
