SALEM, Va. – The No. 18 Washington and Lee women's soccer team used a late goal to earn a crucial 1-0 win over Roanoke on Wednesday night.
The win propels the Generals to 13-0-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the ODAC, while the loss drops the Maroons to 11-4-1 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
The game remained scoreless until the 78th minute, when the Generals capitalized on a strong offensive chance. First-year
Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) maintained control of the ball near the end line, before finding first-year forward
Lindsay White (Greenville, S.C./JL Mann) with a centering pass. White took a touch and shot to the left post to beat the keeper for the only goal of the game.
The Generals were able to limit pressure from the Maroons for the remainder of the game, as W&L allowed just one shot over the final 12 minutes to preserve the win.
White led the way for the W&L offense with a game-high three shots. Her 78th-minute goal was her eighth score of the season, which is now tied for the team lead. Wielechowski finished the game with one shot, while her assist went down as her team-leading fifth of the campaign.
Senior forward Hailey Davis was the only Roanoke player to shoot multiple times in the game, as the W&L defense limited the Maroons to six shots in the contest and just one on goal.
W&L sophomore goalkeeper
Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (11-0-2) was required to make just one save over 90 minutes to notch her eighth shutout of the season and the 10th of her career. Coombs' eight shutouts this season are tied with Kate Stimeling '93 for the seventh most in a season in program history.
Roanoke senior goalkeeper Chris Martin (11-4-1) made four saves in 90 minutes of action, including a penalty-kick stop in the 67th minute in taking the loss.
For the game, the Generals outshot the Maroons, 10-6, and earned five corner kicks to three for Roanoke.
The Generals will return to the pitch on Saturday when they host Randolph at 12:00 pm in ODAC action.
