LEXINGTON, Va. – A hard fought battle between two Top 15 teams went to double overtime, as the 12th-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team tied with No. 14 Roanoke, 1-1, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Generals' overall record sits at 10-2-3, with a 4-1-1 ODAC record, while the Maroons move to 12-1-3 overall and 4-1-2 in conference play.
More than 60 minutes of physical, back-and-forth action between the two teams yielded no goals, until the 67th minute when a foul inside the Maroons' 18-yard box was called, awarding the Generals a penalty kick. Sophomore defender
Seth Chapman (Williamston, Mich./Fowlerville) took the shot and buried it in the low-left corner of the frame to put W&L up, 1-0.
In the 79th minute, Roanoke earned a corner kick that was taken by first-year midfielder Dylan Berk. Berk curled in his cross and it was met on the far post by junior defender Joe Carman, who headed the ball into the back of the net to tie the game.
During the overtime periods, both teams mustered up three shots each, with the Generals' golden opportunity coming with one minute to play in the game, when a shot from close range was turned away by sophomore goalkeeper Zach Behe.
Senior defender
Oliver Dolberg (Clovis, Calif./Floyd B. Buchanan) led the Generals with five shots in the game and put two on goal. Chapman finished the contest with two shots, while junior midfielder
Harris Salom (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) fired four shots and put one attempt on goal.
For the Maroons, Carman, sophomore forward Isaac Wolf and first-year midfielder Luca Kuettel had a team-high two shots each, with Carman holding the lone shot on goal out of the three players.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) (10-2-3) tallied two saves in 110 minutes of action, including a leaping, diving save in the 65th minute to preserve the then scoreless tie. Behe (12-1-3) also played all 110 minutes of the game in goal for Roanoke and made six saves.
For the game, the Generals finished with a 24-11 shot advantage, including 15-6 edge after the first half. W&L earned 10 corner kicks to seven from Roanoke, but both teams took two corners in the second overtime.
The Generals will be back in action on Saturday when they host Guilford at 3:00 pm in the final home regular season game of the year.
