LEXINGTON, Va. — No. 19 Lynchburg scored two goals in the opening 28 minutes of the game and held on for a 2-0 victory over the Washington and Lee field hockey team on Wednesday at the W&L Turf Field.
Junior forward Emily Dudley tallied the first goal 5:41 into the first period. Junior forward Jackie Lerro had the ball right in front of the cage, but her shot was stopped by sophomore goalkeeper
Sara Amil (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run). Lerro then tipped the ball to the right side and Dudley stuffed it in to give the Hornets (13-3, 6-0 ODAC) a 1-0 advantage.
Lynchburg extended the lead to 2-0 with 2:51 left in the second period. First-year midfielder Kessa Romero controlled the ball just outside the circle on the left side. She sent the ball into the circle, where first-year forward Sarah McCollum tipped it just off its line.
The ball rolled directly to junior forward Maggie Chippazzi open near the right post, and she slammed it into the cage for the second goal.
The Generals (7-6, 4-1 ODAC) took seven shots in the opening half, but only put two on goal. In the third, the Blue and White had four shots, including three on goal, but junior goalkeeper Laurel Nicks made three saves to keep the shutout in place. W&L took two more shots in the fourth, but Lynchburg held on for the 2-0 win.
Amil made nine saves in 60 minutes, while Nicks finished with six. Lynchburg had just one more shot than the Generals, 14-13. Senior forward
Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) led the team with five shots, while first-year forward
Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) took three.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host Randolph-Macon at 2:00 pm.
