VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Senior setter
Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) totaled her 2,000th career assist, as the Washington and Lee volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
The Generals (19-5, 6-3 ODAC) took the first set, 25-20, but the Marlins (19-7, 7-2 ODAC) answered with a 25-14 win in the second.
In the third, VWU held a 15-9 lead, but two straight kills by junior outside hitter
Leah Green (Longwood, Fla. Lake/Highland Preparatory School) and junior middle blocker
Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) trimmed the deficit to 15-11.
The Marlins notched a kill to go up, 16-11, but then back-to-back attack errors by VWU, the second due to a block by sophomore middle blocker
Katy Blain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) pulled the Blue and White to within three (16-13).
Virginia Wesleyan still led by three (19-16) six points later, but then three straight points, capped on an ace by junior middle blocker
Madeline Ferguson (San Antonio, Texas/Smithson Valley) tied the set, 19-19. The teams went back and forth over the next few rallies with the score eventually tied, 24-24.
From there, junior outside hitter
Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) tallied a kill, and Blain ended the set (26-24) with a kill off an over pass from the Marlins. The Generals used the momentum of the third to claim the fourth, 25-18, and win the match.
Gould had a team-high 12 kills and seven digs. Green finished with 10 kills. Berry had nine kills and seven blocks. With the seven blocks, she pushed her career total to 294, which is seventh in program history.
First-year defensive specialist
Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) registered 19 digs, and Blain had five kills on nine swings (.556 hitting percentage) to go with four blocks.
Soroka finished with 13 assists, two blocks and four digs. She now has 2,012 assists in her career and is just the fifth player in program history to eclipse 2,000.
Senior outside hitter Elizabeth Britton led the Marlins with 12 kills and 13 digs, while senior libero Alyssa Taylor notched a match-high 22 digs.
