No. 15 Generals extend unbeaten streak to 14 games at Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The 15th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team came away with a 0-0 double-overtime draw at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday evening in ODAC play.

The draw puts the Generals' overall record at 12-0-2 overall, with a 5-0-1 ODAC record, while the Marlins sit at 7-3-3 overall and 3-2-1 in conference. The draw snapped the Generals' program-record 11-game winning streak, but the 14-game unbeaten start to the season is tied with the 2006 team for the best in school history. The 2006 team was also 12-0-2 after 14 games and went unbeaten in its first 18 games.

The Generals' top chances in overtime came off the foot of sophomore forward Madeleine Becker (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy). In the first overtime period, Becker fired a shot from distance that ended up just over the crossbar. In the next period, Becker got a shot off from close range, but her attempt was saved.

After 110 minutes of play, first-year forward Sophia Roche' (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) led the Generals with three shots in the contest, followed by Becker's two overtime attempts. Roche' and Becker combined for three shots on goal.

For the Marlins, senior forward Marli Hayward paced the offense with three shots but failed to put an attempt on goal. Four other Marlins each took two shots in the contest and combined for three shots on goal.

W&L sophomore goalkeeper Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (10-0-2) played all 110 minutes of game time and made six saves to notch her seventh shutout of the season and the ninth of her career. Her seven shutouts this year ties her with Maggie Nolan for the eighth most in a single season in program history.

Virginia Wesleyan first-year keeper Amruta Karkare also played 110 minutes in goal, and kept W&L off the board with five saves.

For the game, the Marlins held a 17-10 shot advantage, including a 12-6 edge after the first half. The Generals earned six corner kicks in the game and Virginia Wesleyan took five.

The Generals will be back in action on Wednesday night when they take on Roanoke on the road at 7:00 pm.
