VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Senior forward
Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) tallied two goals, and senior defender
Olivia Hewitt (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) totaled two assists and one goal to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 3-0 victory at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
The win marked the fifth straight shutout for the Generals (7-5, 4-0 ODAC) and the seventh of the season. It is the longest shutout streak for the team since six straight during the 2009 season.
Paolano notched her first tally of the game in the seventh minute of the first. Off a penalty corner, Hewitt inserted the ball to the top of the circle, and Paolano struck it into the right side of the cage for her sixth goal of the year.
The Blue and White took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but then extended it to 2-0 just four minutes into the third period. The ball was loose in the circle, and then a shot was sent in from near the arc. First-year forward
Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) tipped the ball to Hewitt on the left side. Hewitt controlled the pass and shot around sophomore goalkeeper Maura Bridges for her second goal of the season.
W&L's final tally came five minutes later off another penalty corner. On a play nearly identical to the one that led to the first goal, Hewitt passed to Paolano at the top, and again the senior forward found the back of the cage with her strike.
With the two goals against the Marlins (4-10, 1-3 ODAC), Paolano has six in her last four games and 50 in her career. She is now tied with Maggie Waxter '17 for second at W&L in career goals. Sallie Armstrong '10 holds the all-time mark with 56.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) notched one save to tally her seventh shutout of the season and her fifth straight. She has not allowed a goal in 355:10 straight minutes. Bridges stopped seven shots.
The Blue and White held an 11-2 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in penalty corners.
The Generals return home on Wednesday, when they host 19th-ranked Lynchburg at 7:00 pm.
