VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The top-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team fell, 1-0, to Virginia Wesleyan on the road on Saturday night in ODAC play.

The Generals fall to 10-2-2 overall and 4-1 in the ODAC, while the win propels the Marlins to 6-8 overall and 3-2 in conference.

The lone goal of the game was scored by first-year defender Matthew Goldberg in the 51st minute off an assist from sophomore defender Matt Campbell.

The Generals held the shot advantage in the contest, however, with a mark of 13-2. The offense was paced by junior midfielder
Harris Salom (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg), who finished with three shots and put two attempts on goal. Junior defender
Erik Recke (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) came in next with two shots for the Generals.

Goldberg scored on his only shot of the game and senior midfielder Will Augsberger took the other shot for the Marlins in the contest. Goldberg's goal stood as Virginia Wesleyan's only shot on goal on the night.

W&L sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) (10-2-2) took the loss in net, playing all 90 minutes. Sophomore keeper Griffin Potter earned the win for the Marlins after making six saves in 90 minutes for the clean sheet.

Both defenses played tough all night, combining to allow just three corner kicks all game, with the Generals earning two.

W&L will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Roanoke in ODAC action at 3:00 pm.
