W&L Football Drops a 23-7 Decision to Randolph-Macon

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Randolph-Macon football team controlled the ball for 23:08 of the final 30 minutes to produce a 23-7 victory over Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

W&L (2-1, 0-1) gained 156 of its season-low 183 yards in an evenly-matched first half that saw the Yellow Jackets (3-1, 1-0) carry a 14-7 lead into the halftime break.

Randolph-Macon assumed a 7-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter, a 12-yard touchdown run by senior wide receiver Eric Hoy at the 14:54 mark on a 3rd-and-6 play.

The Generals knotted the game at 7-7 less than seven minutes later when sophomore running back Josh Breece (Lorton, Va. / Stone Bridge) scampered 33 yards for a touchdown, putting him over 100 yards rushing for the second time in three games.  However, R-MC responded with a 9-play, 65-yard drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Burke Estes to junior running back Jordan Foster for a 14-7 lead with 2:58 left in the half.

Neither team dented the scoreboard again until 12:09 remained in the game when sophomore placekicker Chris Vidal finished off a 12-play, 57-yard drive with a career-long 43-yard field goal that gave R-MC a 17-7 lead.

The Generals' offense could not gain traction following the halftime break and the Yellow Jackets continued to salt away the clock with long drives, including a 13-play drive that ate 7:07 from the clock and ended with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Estes to senior running back Tre Frederick with just 3:22 remaining in the contest.

W&L was intercepted on the first play of the next series and the Yellow Jackets ran out the clock for their second straight win on Wilson Field.

W&L finished with just 27 yards of total offense in the second half after possessing the ball for only 6:52 after the intermission.  Breece led the way with 125 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries.  Junior quarterback Drew Richardson (Watkinsville, Ga. / Athens Academy) completed 1-of-2 passes for 39 yards and rushed four times for 12 yards.  Sophomore running back Montgomery Owen (Nashville, Tenn. / Montgomery Bell) caught the lone pass for 39 yards.

On defense, senior safety Thomas Freeland (Franklin, Tenn. / Ensworth) finished with a season-high 12 tackles.  Junior linebacker Will Corry (Watkinsville, Ga. / Athens Academy) added nine tackles and one sack.

All told, Randolph-Macon held the ball on offense for nearly 40 minutes (39:14), gaining 341 yards of total offense. Frederick led the Yellow Jackets with 159 yards on 29 carries.  He also caught four passes for 30 yards and one touchdown.  Estes completed 13-of-17 passes for 96 yards and rushed seven times for 41 yards.  Sophomore linebacker Tyler DeBerry finished with a team-best eight tackles and a half sack.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Bridgewater for a 1:00 pm contest.
