W&L Field Hockey Advances to ODAC Semifinals with 4-0 Win Over Bridgewater

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School) tallied two second-half goals to lead the third-seeded Washington and Lee field hockey to a 4-0 victory over sixth-seeded Bridgewater on Tuesday evening at the W&L Turf Field in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament.

The Generals (8-9) controlled the game from the opening whistle, taking 22 shots in the game compared to just one for the Eagles (8-9). Senior forward Annalise Thole (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) registered the first goal of the game in the 27th minute.

Off a penalty corner, the ball was inserted to the top of the circle. A pass from Tucker found sophomore midfielder Kelly Fennessy (Bel Air, Md. / Roland Park Country School) on the left. Fennessy quickly struck the ball back across the cage, where Thole redirected it inside the right post for her second goal of the season.

Junior forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) extended the advantage to 2-0 just three minutes later. The ball was sent into the circle on the right side, and Paolano struck it toward the cage. It ricocheted off the right post and then off junior goalkeeper Ali Bishop, eventually coming back to the stick of Paolano. She immediately fired the ball into the back of the cage for her 15th goal of the year.

The Blue and White took the 2-0 margin into the second half, and then Tucker put the game away with her two goals. She notched the first in the 40th minute. Sophomore midfielder Abigail Hancock (Darien, Conn./Darien) sent a pass to the top of the circle, and Tucker made one touch to bypass the initial defender. Tucker collected the ball in the center of the circle and then scored inside the left post for her 10th goal this season.

Tucker registered the final tally of the game in the 52nd minute. Tucker possessed the ball at the top of the circle, facing away from the cage. She quickly turned and shot the ball inside the right post to give W&L the 4-0 win. With the two goals, Tucker pushed her career point total to 115, which moved her to third on the Generals' all-time list. She passed Maggie Waxter '17, who finished her career with 114 points.

Senior goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) played the full 70 minutes and did not face a shot for her third shutout of the year. She extended her W&L career shutout record to 14. Bishop played 58 minutes of the game and made 10 saves, while allowing all four goals.

The Generals advance to the ODAC semifinals, where they will play second-seeded Shenandoah on Friday at Lynchburg at 7:30 pm. The Blue and White defeated the Hornets earlier this season, 5-2.
