W&L Wrestling Wins a Pair of Matches at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team evened its record at 6-6 overall and improved to 3-2 in the Centennial Conference with a pair of wins in three matches held at McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals knocked off McDaniel by a score of 21-13 and narrowly lost to Gettysburg, 21-15.  W&L recovered to finish the day with a 39-15 victory over Hampden-Sydney.

The Blue & White received a pair of big wins in the upper weight classes to hold off the Green Terror (3-9, 0-4) in the opening match.  McDaniel held a 7-5 advantage after three weight classes, before W&L claimed successive wins at 149, 157 and 165 pounds to post a 15-7 lead.  Junior Zachary Papin (Carrollton, Texas / St. Mark's) got the ball rolling with an 8-4 decision over Clint Wright at 149 pounds.  First-year Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) followed with a 6-1 win at 157 and classmate Joe Scott (Efland, N.C. / Orange) tallied a 15-6 major decision over Erik Meyer.  McDaniel claimed a decision at 174 to pull within 15-10, but first-year Iszak Morgan (Portage, Ind. / Portage) logged a vital 7-4 decision over Ronald Mattox at 184 pounds for an 18-10 lead.  The Green Terror won at 197 pounds ensuring the match would be decided at 285 pounds.  Junior Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) posted a 2-1 win over Billy Emerson in the final match to help W&L secure the win.

Against Gettysburg (9-4, 3-2), W&L held a 12-9 lead after a 15-6 win by Scott in the 165-pound weight class.  The Bullets recorded a pin at 174 pounds to take a 15-12 lead, but Morgan produced another crucial win at 184 pounds, downing Austin Roskos by a score of 6-1 to knot the team score at 15-15.  GC notched a 5-0 win at 197 for an 18-15 lead and Kaminer took All-American Paul Triandafilou to overtime in the heavyweight match before succumbing, 3-1.

In the final match, the Generals easily defeated Hampden-Sydney by producing three pins and winning three matches by forfeit.  Sophomore Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) pinned Brian Swenson at 133 pounds to finish his day with a perfect 3-0 record.  First-year Colby Boudreau (Epsom, N.H. / Northfield Mount Hermon) logged a pin over Conner Cronk at 157 pounds and first-year Andrew Taylor (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) pinned Traylor Nichols as well.

Papin also finished his day with a 3-0 overall mark, while Scott was 2-0.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday when it travels to Southern Virginia for a 6:30 pm contest.
