W&L Field Hockey Falls to No. 18 Mary Washington, 4-1

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team fell at 18th-ranked Mary Washington on Wednesday, 4-1, as the Eagles scored four unanswered goals.

Senior forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) recorded the first goal of the game in the 10th minute to give the Generals (4-3) a 1-0 advantage.

UMW (5-2) gained the lead in the final four minutes of the first half. First-year forward Victoria Novak tied the contest, 1-1, with 3:07 left on the clock, and then first-year midfielder Lauren Hopkins tallied a goal 1:46 later to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Hopkins scored her second goal of the game six minutes into the second half, and junior forward Morgan LaRowe notched the final goal with 11:20 left on the clock.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) played the full 70 minutes for W&L and made seven saves. Sophomore keeper Jessica Cavolt earned the victory for UMW with three stops.

Waxter now has 35 goals in her career, which moved into solo third on the W&L career list. Jane Beall '06 is second with 42.

Waxter also pushed her career points total to 78 to move into solo third on the W&L all-time list. Beall is second on that list as well with 106 points.

The Eagles led in shots, 17-4, but had just a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.

The Generals begin ODAC play on Saturday, when they host Shenandoah at 1:00 pm.
