Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. — Johns Hopkins scored the lone goal in the second half to edge the Washington and Lee field hockey team, 2-1, on Friday at Homewood Field in the season-opener for each team.
The Blue Jays (1-0) took the 2-1 lead with 23:35 left in game on a penalty corner. Junior forward Clare Kavanagh passed the ball into play, and junior defender Francesca Cali scored the goal by lifting her shot over sophomore goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) to take the lead.
The Generals (0-1) scored the first goal of the game on a counter attack in the 15th minute. Sophomore forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School) had the ball just outside the circle and fired it toward the goal. First-year forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) deflected the pass past junior goalkeeper Greta Helvie for her first collegiate goal.
The Blue Jays evened the score, 1-1, with 15 minutes remaining in the first on a penalty corner. Cali inserted the ball on the left side, and first-year midfielder Katie McErlean shot from just inside the circle into the bottom right corner of the cage.
JHU had the opportunity to grab a lead before intermission, but Yavalar stopped two shots in the final two minutes of the opening stanza to keep the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Yavalar made eight saves over 70 minutes but took the loss for W&L. Helvie played the entire first half, but was then pulled for senior goalkeeper Zoey Atabek in the second. Atabek played the final 35 minutes and stopped one shot to record the victory.
The Blue Jays held a slim advantage in shots, 10-8, but all 10 shots were on goal compared to just three shots on target for the Generals. Each team took four penalty corners.
The Blue and White return to action on Saturday, when it plays at Catholic at 5:30 pm.
