Box Score YORK, Pa. – First-year midfielder Laney Smith (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook) scored two goals in Washington and Lee's 3-0 victory at York College of Pennsylvania in women's soccer action on Saturday.
The Generals (3-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 12:22 mark when sophomore forward Caroline Peters (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) scored on a header following a scramble that occurred on a long throw-in.
Smith then gave W&L a 2-0 lead in the 31st minute when sophomore forward Megan Engeland (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) collected a rebound and fed her for a shot that beat York (2-4) first-year goalkeeper Brittany Cullison.
The Blue & White carried their two-goal lead into the halftime break, but added another tally just 2:30 into the second half when Smith scored off an assist from junior midfielder Rebecca Morris (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall).
For the game, the Generals out-shot the Spartans, 17-6, and held a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Sophomore Maggie Nolan (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) logged four saves to earn the shutout in goal for W&L. Cullison played 59:10 in goal and posted five saves for York, while sophomore Emily Faust played the final 30:50, making two saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday when it hosts St. Mary's (Md.) for a 3:00 pm contest.
