FERRUM, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team opened its 2016-17 season on Saturday, falling at Ferrum College by a score of 28-13.
The Generals (0-1) trailed just 16-13, before suffering back-to-back losses by fall in the final two weight classes.
Sophomore Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) gave W&L an early 5-3 lead when he posted a 17-0 technical fall over Brett Sommers at 133 pounds. First-year 157-pounder Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) also notched a 17-0 technical fall, defeating Austyn Renshaw to make it 10-10.
First-year Rexx Hallyburton (Bishop, Ga. / Oconee County) also produced a win for W&L, notching a 6-5 decision over Adam Bresson at 184 pounds tha pulled the Generals within three (16-13).
Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it participates in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. Action begins at 9:00 am.
