Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — First-year forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) registered a hat trick in the first half, and eight W&L players scored a goal en route to an 11-0 victory for the Washington and Lee field hockey team over Sweet Briar on Thursday at the W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (11-5, 6-1 ODAC) were leading, 2-0, when Paolano scored three consecutive goals to put W&L up 5-0 over the Vixens (0-14, 0-7 ODAC) with 22:47 left in the first half. The Blue and White extended the lead to 8-0 by the end of the first stanza, and tallied three second-half goals to reach the final margin.
It marked the second hat trick of the season for Paolano, as she became only the second player in program history with multiple three-goal games in a single season. Senior forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) is the other player to achieve the feat, doing it in 2015 and 2016. Paolano now has 11 tallies on the season.
Waxter scored two goals in the game to push her season total to 15, which is tied for the sixth-best single-season total in W&L history. She now has 36 points this season, which marks a career best and is the fourth-highest total in a single season in program history. Waxter is one point (105 career points) from tying Jane Beall '06 (106 points) for second on the career list.
Senior midfielder Kendall Peterson (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) had two assists and one goal in the contest. With the two assists, she moved into third in career assists with 19. She is also third in single-season assists, as she has nine this year.
Sophomore forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School) scored the Generals' first goal. Sophomore forward Audrey Brady (Far Hills, N.J./Brooks School), first-year forward Mira Bharatiya (Trenton, N.J./Robbinsville) and junior forward Grace Bowen (Hampton, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) also scored in the first half. The goal by Bharatiya was the first in her collegiate career.
Senior forward Camilla Davis (Richmond, Va./Maggie Walker Governor's School) notched a goal in the second half, and first-year defender Olivia Hewitt (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) tallied her first collegiate assist on the play.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) and first-year keeper Frances Marie Pugh (Richmond, Va./Henrico) split time in cage. Yavalar played the opening 10:57 of the first half. Pugh saw the final 59:03 of action, but neither faced a shot. Senior Kayla Dooms played the opening 35 minutes in goal for Sweet Briar and made 10 saves, while allowing eight goals. First-year Ashleigh Skipper was in for the entirety the second half and stopped nine shots.
The Generals play their final regular season game on Saturday at Bridgewater at 1:00 pm.
