Box Score SALEM, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team scored two goals in the second half on its way to a 3-1 victory at Roanoke on Wednesday.
Junior defender Maggie Sands (Glen Arm, Md./Notre Dame Prep) tallied the game-winning goal 6:26 into the second half. The ball was played in from the far side, and took a large hop as it entered the circle. Sophomore Heather Schauder, the Maroons' (9-5, 3-3 ODAC) goalkeeper, came off her line to make a play on the ball, but it bounced past her.
Sands was on the back side of the play and struck the ball into the open goal to give the Generals (9-5, 4-1 ODAC) a 2-1 lead. The Blue and White tallied the final goal with under two minutes remaining in the game. Off a penalty corner, senior defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St. Paul's School) inserted the ball, and sophomore forward Allie DiPietro (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest School) finished the play with her fifth goal of the year to reach the final margin, 3-1.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) made three saves and allowed one goal in 70 minutes to earn the victory. Schauder allowed all three goals and stopped four shots in 70 minutes. W&L led in shots, 13-10, and held a 9-1 advantage in penalty corners.
The Blue and White scored the first goal of the game in the 19th minute. Senior forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) passed the ball from the near side to the center of the circle.
Sophomore forward Audrey Brady (Far Hills, N.J./Brooks School) redirected the ball into the cage for her second goal of the season. Roanoke tied the game with 32 seconds remaining in the first half on a goal by junior midfielder Rebecca Schmidt.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host Eastern Mennonite for Senior Day at 12:00 pm.
