W&L Field Hockey Knocked Off By Lynchburg, 3-1

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore midfielder Nicole Simpao scored a pair of first-half goals to lead the Lynchburg field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Washington and Lee on Saturday at Shellenberger Field.

Simpao gave the Hornets (6-6, 4-0) a 1-0 lead just 5:38 into the contest when she scored unassisted.

W&L (8-5, 3-1) evened the game at 1-1 in the 12th-minute when sophomore forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's School) found the cage off a pass from senior forward Camilla Davis (Richmond, Va. / Maggie Walker Governor's School) on a penalty corner.  However, Simpao scored another unassisted tally just 3:38 later at the 14:50 mark for a 2-1 lead that the Hornets carried into the intermission.

LC received an insurance goal at the 58:50 mark when sophomore forward Isabella Eldridge beat a trio of defenders and scored unassisted. 

W&L was out-shot by a 14-2 count and Lynchburg held a 9-7 edge in penalty corners. 

Sophomore Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md. / Garrison Forest School) played all 70 minutes in cage for the Generals, making two stops.  Senior Beka Hess also played the duration in goal for the Hornets and did not make a save.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Roanoke for a 7:00 pm contest.
