W&L Field Hockey Cruises to a 9-1 Win Over Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park Country School) tied a school record with eight points in leading the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 9-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.

Despite scoring 18 goals across their last two games, it was not the Generals who got on the board first in the contest.  Virginia Wesleyan (2-6, 0-2) jumped out to the early advantage when senior midfielder Asiah Allen collected the ball in a scrum in front of goal and sent a shot past W&L sophomore keeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md. / Garrison Forest School) just 6:00 into the contest.

The Marlins held the advantage for nearly seven minutes until Waxter deflected a shot by senior midfielder Kendall Peterson (Towson, Md. / Notre Dame Prep) past VWC sophomore goalkeeper Skye Swain at the 12:52 mark.  W&L capitalized on the momentum, scoring a second goal just 1:09 later when Waxter found sophomore forward Allie DiPietro (Owings Mills, Md. / Garrison Forest School) in front of goal for a 2-1 lead.

W&L added five more goals before the halftime break to pull out to a 6-1 lead at the intermission.  Waxter posted her second goal unassisted at 22:17 and sophomore midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's School) knocked one home in front of goal at 29:49 for a 4-1 lead.

First-year forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor) dribbled through the middle of the defense for a goal at 33:09 and Waxter completed her hat trick with a goal at 42:22.  Waxter then found senior forward Camilla Davis (Richmond, Va. / Maggie Walker Governor's School) for the final goal of the half with just 1:13 left before the break.

Senior defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md. / St. Paul's School) and junior forward Grace Bowen (Hampton, Va. / Hampton Roads Academy) both added scores in the second half for the final margin.

W&L held a 22-7 advantage in shots and took six corners, as opposed to five for the Marlins.

Waxter's eight points on three goals and two assists tied the W&L record for points in a game held by Sallie Armstrong '10 and Kendall Korte '08.  Paolano added one goal and one helper, while Yavalar notched five saves in cage.

Swain posted nine saves for the Marlins.

Washington and Lee will look to win its third straight when it hosts Christopher Newport for a 1:00 pm contest on Sunday.
