PITTSBURGH, Pa. – First-year Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) won two individual events to lead the Washington and Lee men's swimming team to a 1-1 record in a tri-meet at Carnegie Mellon on Saturday afternoon.
The twenty-seventh ranked Generals (4-1) were knocked off by tenth-ranked CMU (213-75) and defeated Allegheny (178-81).
Thetford posted victories in the 50 free (21.38) and the 100 free (47.44), and he swam on the 200 medley (1:38.76) and 200 free (1:27.93) relay teams that both finished second overall. He was joined on the 200 medley relay squad by sophomore Andrew Botelho (Huntersville, N.C. / William Amos Hough), sophomore Trenton Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford) and sophomore Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal). He was then flanked by junior Matt Kiser (Dunwoody, Ga. / Dunwoody), first-year John Carmody (West Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic) and sophomore Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day) on the 200 free relay team.
First-year Noah Schammel (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's Catholic School) also claimed an event win, touching first in the 100 fly with a time of 53.46. He then added a second-place finish in the 200 fly (1:57.64) and a fourth-place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:19.12.
Ferguson posted a third-place showing in the 100 fly (54.08), while first-year Thomas Caldwell (Greenville, S.C. / Wade Hampton) and Burns both had two fifth-place finishes. Caldwell finished fifth in the 200 free (1:49.96) and the 500 free (4:59.29) and Burns was fifth in the 50 free (22.68) and the 100 free (49.20).
Sophomore Jamie Hayes (Chattanooga, Tenn. / McCallie School) placed fourth in the 1000 free (10:27.93) and senior Alex Cram (Columbia, S.C. / Irmo) finished fourth in the 200 back (2:01.35).
Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday as it competes in the three-day Franklin & Marshall Invitational.
