W&L Football Downed by Guilford, 52-28

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford junior quarterback Matt Pawlowski threw for 356 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Quakers to a 52-28 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at the Armfield Athletic Center.

The Quakers (4-0) jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in scoring their most points in the history of the series between the two teams.

After forcing a W&L (0-4) punt on the opening possession, the Quakers marched 61 yards in 10 plays and junior placekicker Tyler Hunt booted a 36-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.

Guilford forced a 3-and-out on the next W&L offensive possession and the Quakers scored three plays later on a 55-yard touchdown run by first-year running back De'Eric Bell for a 10-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game.

The Generals fumbled on the ensuing kickoff and GC scored five plays later when Pawlowski hooked up with Austen Thompson for a 3-yard touchdown pass.

W&L got on the board at the 13:07 mark of the second quarter when sophomore running back Marshall Hollerith (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) capped a 10-play, 72-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run that made it 17-7.  However, Guilford scored just 2:17 later when Pawlowski found junior wide receiver Hayden Read on a 56-yard scoring strike.  Pawlowski threw a third TD pass of the first half at the 6:26 mark, finding junior wide receiver Adam Smith with an 11-yard scoring toss that made it 31-7.

The Generals strung together another long drive late in the first half, driving 88 yards in 14 plays, scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Jimmy Dugan (Rye, N.Y./Rye) with 1:25 left in the half.  However, Pawlowski drove the Quakers 75 yards in just seven plays to throw a fourth touchdown pass, this time hitting junior wide receiver Chad Christopher from eight yards out for a 38-14 lead at the break.

Guilford failed on a fake punt attempt on their first possession of the second half and the Generals took advantage, scoring on a 27-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Charlie Nelson (Redding, Conn./St. Luke's) with 10:10 left in the third quarter.  GC fumbled on the ensuing kickoff return, setting the Generals up on the GC 17-yardline.  However, W&L was stopped on downs at the 10-yardline and the Quakers scored six plays later on a 5-yard touchdown run by Bell to make it a 45-21 game with 6:37 left.

Pawlowski added an 18-yard touchdown pass to Bell with 2:54 left in the third quarter and the Generals tallied a 5-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to first-year wide receiver Witt Hawkins (Memphis, Tenn. / Memphis University School) with 3:19 left in the game for the final margin.

W&L gained 459 yards of total offense in the contest, but converted on just 3-of-6 fourth-down conversions and was just 3-of-5 in red zone conversions.  Nelson led the way, rushing for 114 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and completing 9-of-17 passes for 111 yards and one touchdown with one interception.  Hollerith gained 98 yards and one score on 23 carries and Hawkins grabbed three passes for 42 yards and one touchdown.  First-year linebacker Max Garrett (Fairfield, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) led the defense with 10 tackles.

Guilford amassed 567 yards of total offense led by Pawlowski's effort.  Bell rushed 24 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns and caught five passes for 93 yards and another score.  Read added two catches for 94 yards and a touchdown.  Senior safety Satiir Stevenson racked up a game-high 22 tackles and intercepted a pass.

W&L returns to action next Saturday when it plays host to Hampden-Sydney for a 1:00 pm contest.
