COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team split a pair of Centennial Conference matches on Saturday afternoon at Ursinus College. The Generals defeated Muhlenberg, 43-6, but fell to the home-standing Bears by a score of 51-0.
W&L (2-13, 2-6) picked up five forfeit wins and won three of the fourth contested matches in the victory over the Mules. First-year Adam Davis (Stuarts Draft, Va. / Stuarts Draft) logged a win by fall (2:42) over Patrick Fruehling at 133 pounds and first-year Tyler Kaelin (Crestwood, Ky. / Oldham County) notched an 11-2 major decision over Che Chengsupanimit at 141 pounds. Sophomore Matt Howell (Jacksonville, Fla. / Bolles School) also won his match by decision, knocking off Matthew Goldstein at 149 pounds for a 13-0 lead.
The Generals then notched forfeit wins at 157, 165, 174, 184 and 197, before first-year Grant Cokeley (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington) fell to Chris Galletta by fall (4:59) in the 285-pound weight class.
Cokeley's match at 285 pounds proved to be the closest in the loss to Ursinus as he dropped a 9-5 decision to Robert Scaramuzza.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it competes in the Centennial Conference Championships hosted by Johns Hopkins beginning at 10:00 am.
