LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team was in action on Sunday at the Desert Duals hosted by Wartburg in Las Vegas, Nev. The Generals finished the day with an 0-4 record.
The Generals (0-5) fell to Pacific of Oregon by a score of 28-17, lost to Loras 28-12, dropped a 32-12 decision to Rhode Island College, and were defeated by Olivet, 42-3.
The top individual for W&L was first-year 285-pounder Grant Cokeley (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington), who completed the day with a 3-1 overall record. Cokeley posted a 3-1 win over Evan Scheurs of Pacific then recorded a 1-0 decision against Kyle Henry of Loras. Cokeley fell to Brian Nicoll of Rhode Island, before recovering to produce the Generals' lone win in the Olivet match, a 3-2 decision over Jack Griggs.
Sophomore Conor Duffey (Boxford, Mass./Brooks School) finished with a 2-0 record, competing against Pacific and Loras, but sitting out in the final two matches. Duffey opened with a 15-1 major decision over Allin Franco of Pacific, then notched an 8-3 win over Greg Vance of Loras.
First-year 125-pounder Adam Davis (Stuarts Draft, Va./Stuarts Draft) completed his day with a 2-2 overall mark. He pinned Daylin Ruggireo of Pacific in 3:59 and won by forfeit against Loras. Davis was then defeated by Mike Sugarmeyer of Rhode Island, 12-5, and was pinned by Henry McKeown of Olivet in 4:11 to finished his tournament.
Washington and Lee will now break for the holidays before returning to action on January 5 with a dual match at home against Ohio Northern. The match is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
