ADA, Ohio – The Washington and Lee wrestling team claimed two place-winners at the Ohio Northern Invitational on Saturday.
Junior Dan Igel (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. / Bolles School) was the Generals' top competitor, finishing in fifth-place in the 157-pound weight class. Igel opened his day with a 7-3 win over Heidelberg's Aaron Banko, but fell to Waynesburg's Sam Lombardo in the second round by a score of 7-4. Igel then recorded four-straight wins by decision before falling once again to Lombardo (fall 1:18). He then recorded a forfeit win over Mt. St. Joseph's Tommy Fehring in the fifth-place match to complete his day with a 6-2 record.
Sophomore Conor Duffey (Boxford, Mass. / Brooks School) also placed for W&L, finishing in eight-place in the 149-pound bracket. Duffey notched a 9-0 win over Jarrett Sadler of Alma in the opening match. He then recorded a 4-2 win over Justin Tomasek of Olivet in the second round, before suffering a loss by fall (5:24) to Andrew Johnson of Heidelberg. He followed the loss with a 3-1 win over Kyle Brezovec of Ohio Northern, but fell in his final two matches of the day to complete the tournament with a 3-3 mark.
Other top finishes for W&L included a 2-2 mark for first-year Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa. / Haverford School) at 174 pounds and a 2-2 record for first-year 285-pounder Grant Cokeley (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington).
Washington and Lee will return to action on December 16 at the Desert Duals hosted by Wartburg in Las Vegas, Nev.
