LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and
women's swim teams competed in a dual meet with Johns Hopkins
University on Saturday at Cy Twombly pool, with both teams falling
to the Blue Jays. The men lost by a score of 107.5-154.5, while the
women fell, 95-161.
The men were paced by three individual and one relay event
victories. Senior Josh Gonzalez (Bridgewater,
N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) claimed the 200 fly with a time of
2:00.08, while first-year Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley)
took the 50 free (21.47) and sophomore Chris Washnock (Greer,
S.C./Greenville) touched first in the 400 IM (4:15.18). Sykes was
also a part of the victorious 200 free relay squad that recorded a
time of 1:26.02. He was joined by senior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy,
N.C./Mount Airy), first-year Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St.
Andrew's) and senior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills,
Kan./Shawnee).
Other top finishers for the Generals included second-place finishes
by Gehrs in the 200 free (1:45.62), Washnock in the 100 back
(53.79) and 200 back (1:55.09), sophomore Robert Grattan (Richmond,
Va./Trinity Episcopal) in the 100 breast (1:01.30), junior Brandon
Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) in the 500 free
(4:55.08) and sophomore Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery)
in the 100 fly (52.33). The 200 medley relay squad of Marsh, Sykes,
Brian Stirling and sophomore Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook,
Ala./Mountain Brook) also touched in second with a time of
1:37.72.
On the women's side, the Generals claimed two event
victories, with sophomore Katie Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J./Mount
Saint Mary) taking the 400 IM in a time of 4:58.44 and the 200 free
relay squad of senior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South
Mecklenburg), first-year Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro,
N.C./Greensboro Day School), sophomore Dana Fredericks (Yorktown,
Va./York) and senior Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School)
touching in first with a time of 1:43.72.
W&L had several second-place finishes, including first-year Ann
McCampbell (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady School) in the 1000 free
(11:05.81), sophomore Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte
Country Day) in the 100 back (1:01.79) and 200 back (2:16.40) and
senior Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) in the 100 breast
(1:09.04) and 200 breast (2:31.69). First-year Brittany Ross
(Chatham, N.J./Chatham) also finished second in the 400 IM
(5:02.11), and was a member of the second-place 200 medley relay
squad that recorded a time of 1:54.27. Ross was joined on the relay
squad by junior Tess Hayden (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), Bazzel and
Simpson.
The men are now 8-4 on the season, while the women are 6-5. The
women will return to action Feb. 12-14 at the ODAC women's
swimming championships, while the men will next take to the pool
Feb. 17-20 at the Bluegrass Mountain championships.
