CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Junior attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) scored a career-high five goals in leading the 19th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 9-3 victory over sixth-ranked Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
The Generals (4-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first period on a pair of scores just 21 seconds apart. Keigler opened the scoring with a goal off an assist from senior midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) at the 7:57 mark. Sophomore midfielder Mark Wachtmeister (Wellesley, Mass./Belmont Hill) then scored unassisted at the 7:36 mark.
The Shoremen (3-1) came storming back with a two goal spurt of their own that started just 33 seconds after the Generals' barrage. Josh Perlow found the net off a feed from Shane Kaski at 7:03 and Brendan O'Leary scored off an assist from Matt Moreton at the 6:21 mark to knot the game at 2-2.
Washington and Lee took the lead back with 5:50 left in the first period on a man-up goal from Seth Fishman off a feed from sophomore attackman Spence Daw (Phoenix, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) and the Generals outscored the Shoremen 4-0 over the second quarter, including a trio of scores from Keigler, for a 7-2 lead at the intermission.
Washington College creeped back to within 7-3 on a goal by Doug Herdegen from an O'Leary feed with 59 seconds left in the third quarter, but the Generals added a pair of insurance goals in the final period for their first win over the Shoremen since the 2005 season.
Keigler led the Generals' offense with his five tallies, while Wachtmeister totaled one goal and one assist. Senior Connor Locke (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) recorded 13 saves in goal as the Generals' defense held Washington to its lowest scoring output since the 2007 campaign (9-3 loss to Gettysburg).
O'Leary led the Shoremen with one goal and one assist. Gordon Cohen recorded 20 saves in goal for Washington.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts the Merchant Marine Academy for a 5:00 pm contest.
