LEXINGTON, Va. - The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team scored eight goals in the second quarter en route to posting a 14-7 victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field.
The Generals (5-0) trailed 2-1 with 6:31 left in the first quarter, but went on to score nine of the game's next 10 goals for a 10-3 lead at the intermission. Senior midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) scored three goals during eight-goal second period, while senior midfielder Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson) chipped in one goal and one assist.
The Mariners (3-1) opened the third period with three-straight tallies to slice the W&L lead to 10-6 just 4:29 into the quarter, but a goal by sophomore attackman Drew Mancini (Hillsborough, Calif./Deerfield Academy) off a St. John feed and a man-up goal by senior attackman Seth Fishman (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Haverford) off an assist by junior attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) stretched the Generals' lead back to 12-6 entering the final period.
For the game, the Generals held a 49-21 advantage in shots and a 42-22 edge in ground balls.
St. John paced W&L with four goals and one assist, while Keigler had one goal and three helpers. Skeen notched two goals and one assist and Fishman and sophomore midfielder Mark Wachtmeister (Wellesley, Mass./Belmont Hill) totaled two goals apiece. Senior Connor Locke (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) played the first 58:47 in goal and notched nine saves. Sophomore Ned Lundvall (Richmond, Va./Gilman) played the final 1:13 and did not face a shot.
Senior attackman Brennan Dougherty (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) scored a team-best three goals for USMMA. Sophomore midfielder Robert Atkinson (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) and junior attackman Brian Flannery (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) chipped in one goal and one assist each. Junior Keegan Boyle (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) played all 60 minutes between the pipes and made nine saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Franklin & Marshall for a 7:00 pm contest.
