LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team dropped a pair of games to Virginia Wesleyan, falling 11-5 in game one and 5-2 in the nightcap, at Cap'n Dick Smith Field on Saturday afternoon.
Virginia Wesleyan used some aggressive running on the basepaths en route to its two-game sweep. The Marlins (9-4, 2-0 ODAC) were 17-of-18 in stolen base attempts in the two games.
W&L jumped out a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opener, but VWC responded with four runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Marlins then tacked on a single run in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and added four more in the seventh, while the Generals scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Sophomore outfielder
Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) led W&L at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a homerun and three RBI. First-year outfielder
Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) added one hit in two at-bats with a run scored and an RBI.
Junior
Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) took the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits. He walked two and struck out two in six innings.
The Marlins were paced by third baseman Max Axlerod who went 3-for-4 with a run driven in and a stolen base. Shorstop Brandon Hathaway went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, while left fielder Kevin Nally posted a 1-for-3 day with an RBI, run scored and two stolen bases.
Nick Pisula earned the win for VWC after allowing five runs on six hits, one walk and two strikeouts in six innings of work.
Virginia Wesleyan took a 3-0 lead after two innings and kept W&L at bay with the help of three double-plays in posting the 5-2 win.
Junior catcher
Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) led W&L, going 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while junior shortstop
John Ditore (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet) also went 2-for-4 and senior second baseman added 2 hits in five at-bats with a run scored.
Senior righthander
Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) took the loss for the Generals after allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts in five innings of work.
Centerfielder Myles Shipp led VWC in game two, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and an RBI and two stolen bases. Nally went 3-for-4 with an RBI and stole two bases as well.
Gary Bulman picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings. He walked two and fanned three. Colin McNulty pitched the final four innings, giving up just four hits in earning the save.
The Generals return to action on Sunday with a double-header against Westminster (Pa.). Game one is set to begin at 12:00 pm at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
