LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team won its second-straight extra-inning affair, with a 5-4 win over Hampden-Sydney on Thursday evening at Cap'n Dick Smith field.
The Generals (6-1) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 4-3 lead, before the Tigers (5-4) plated a two-out run in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 4-4. W&L had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth as it loaded the bases with no outs, but a groundout followed by an inning-ending double-play snuffed out the Generals' rally.
Junior first baseman
Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft School) led off the 10
th with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by first-year
Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond). After an intentional walk to senior second baseman
Byron Peyster (Washington, D.C./Maret), both runners moved up on a wild pitch by Hampden-Sydney junior righthander John West (Lanexa, Va./Lafayette). Junior
Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) was intentionally walked to load the bases and sophomore
Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) followed with a sacrifice fly to right that brought Serenbetz home with the winning run.
Plantholt (3-0) was credited with the win after pitching one inning of relief and allowing no runs with one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Sophomore
Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) started for W&L and allowed three runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out three in 6.2 innings of work.
At the plate, the Generals were led by Serenbetz who posted a 2-for-5 day with two runs scored and an RBI, while junior catcher
Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Peyster was 1-for-3 with an RBI and senior centerfielder
Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.
Hampden-Sydney was led by sophomore catcher Zach Harrelson (Danville, Va./George Washington), who was 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI. First-year outfielder Erik Hermann (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) and junior outfielder Nick Price (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) each went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while senior first baseman Evan Rogers (Chester, Va./L.C. Bird) added a solo homerun.
Junior righthander Robbie Bailey (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) started for the Tigers and allowed one unearned run in six innings. He gave up three hits and three walks while striking out three. West took the loss as he gave up one run on three hits and three walks in two innings of work.
Washington and Lee returns to action with a home double-header against Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. Game one is set to begin at 12:00 pm.
