LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team split an ODAC-doubleheader with Lynchburg on Monday afternoon. The Generals took game one, 5-4, before falling in the nightcap, 9-5.
W&L (14-6, 5-4 ODAC) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one to turn a 4-1 deficit, into a 5-4 win. After Lynchburg (17-9, 7-1) scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-1 lead, junior third baseman
Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) led off the bottom half of the inning with a single before first-year
Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) replaced him on the base paths. Sophomore
Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) and senior first baseman
Andrew Henderson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) hit back-to-back singles, with Henderson's driving in Decembrino, to make it a 4-2 ballgame.
Sophomore designated hitter
Drew Dezen (Greenville, S.C./Greenville Senior) followed with a two-RBI double to tie the game. Dezen advanced to third on a groundout by junior shortstop
John Ditore (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet) and scored the winning run on a single by senior second baseman
Byron Peyster (Washington, D.C./Maret).
Plantholt was a perfect 2-for-2 and was hit by a pitch in game one, while Dezen was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Junior righthander
Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) (2-1) earned the win as he allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and six strikeouts with no walks in seven innings of work.
For the Hornets, junior centerfielder Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while senior third baseman Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, Va./William Campbell) went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and one run scored. First-year righthander Robert Garrett (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) (0-1) took the loss for Lynchburg as he allowed two hits and one run in a third of an inning.
In game two, the Generals took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on consecutive doubles by Ditore and senior centerfielder
Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and maintained that lead until LC scored four runs in the seventh inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Hornets would tack on three more runs in the eighth and two in the ninth. W&L attempted to pull off another rally, scoring once in the eighth to make it 7-2, and then three more times in the bottom of the ninth for the final margin of 9-5.
Ditore led W&L at the plate in game two, as he went 4-for-5 with two RBI, two runs scored and three doubles. McKelvey went 2-for-4 with a double and a run driven in, while Dezen added two hit in four at-bats with a run scored. Senior
Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) started and took the loss as the gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk in 6.2 innings. Clark struck out six.
LC was paced by sophomore second baseman Jordan Watkins (Freeland, Md./Hereford), who was 5-for-6 at the plate. Watkins added three RBI and scored one run. Grant finished game two 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Senior righthander Joe Devlin (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) (4-1) picked up the win as he threw seven innings of one-run ball. He allowed eights hits and one walk, while striking out five.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Shenandoah in a 3:00 pm game.
